Commuting to Boston from the North Shore & North of Boston Suburbs

By Car

The cities and towns north of Boston are sited ideally from all points of Boston.   The geography of the North Shore offers easy access to all of the Boston Metro plus the vacation areas of New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, the Berkshires of Western Mass and New York.

The three primary automotive routes:  I-93, I-95 (aka Rte 128) and Rte 1.

I-93 heads due north from Boston and offers fast access to Malden, Medford, Winchester, Melrose, Stoneham, Woburn, Wakefield, Reading, North Reading and others towns due north. Most of these towns are within five to twelve miles commute to Boston via I-93.

In addition, I-93 is the primary highway to New Hampshire including Manchester, Concord, all lakes regions, Vermont and even Canada. In addition, access to the vacation zones of New Hampshire and Maine are a short drive.

Rtes 1 & 95 travel Northeast from Boston and offer the commuters from Saugus, Melrose, Lynnfield, Peabody, Salem, Beverly and all other points north fast access to Boston.  In addition, these highways connect directly to coastal New Hampshire.  At Portsmouth, the traveler can continue north into Maine or take Rte 16 to the vacation areas in Conway NH featuring Mt Washington and all ski areas.

The border of Maine is about 1 hour north of Boston and day trips to Maine are fun and enjoyable.  There are outlets in Kittery, great dining and entertainment in Ogunquit and Wells, antiquing and summer get-aways in Kennebunkport, and the metro area or Portland - a sophisticated and fun place to visit.

Finally I-95 (Rte 128 to the locals) is the ring road around Boston.  Need to head west to the western suburbs?  Rte 128 takes you to the Mass Pike plus the towns of Concord, Weston, Wellesley, Framingham, Sudbury or even Worcester.   Connecticut is about 1.5 hours travel and New York City is about 4 hours.
